Free Hour, otherwise known as the reason for all the long lines in the Commons between noon and 1 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (seriously, can a girl just grab a box of sushi and skitter back to class already?), was actually the result of grassroots student organizing back in 1970. UMBC formed its first Student Union to lobby for fairer policies from the university administration, and this was just one of their many causes.
