Parking and traffic have always been on the front burner at UMBC -- especially when the campus was a primarily commuter campus in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. An 1976 article in The Weekly Retriever advised students who were having trouble parking that "the best way to avoid wandering aimlessly around the more popular places to 'save time,' is to go directly to a unfrequented area and park, saving yourself frustration and time. Simply leave home a few minutes earlier in anticipation of this and really, the walk could prove to be pleasant."
